Hands of a Child Co-Ops In a Nutshell |
|
|
|
The Grand Overview of HOAC On-Line CoOps:
- Look at the HOAC CoOps Schedule and see what CoOp you want to do and what HOAC Unit you have (you MUST own the Unit in order to join the CoOp)
- Look at the Job List and see what you want to do
- Sign ups for each CoOp start four weeks prior to the Teaching Weeks (when you sign up for a job, you get the S&S for that particular CoOp)
- Yahoo Groups are created and you need to join them two weeks prior to the Teaching Weeks (this is called the Planning Weeks)
- You send in your "job" to the Yahoo Groups during the first week of the Planning Weeks
- By the end of the Planning Weeks, you will have the final Daily Unit Planner and all the additional Graphics for this Unit Extension
If I join a CoOp, what is expected of me:
- You must own the HOAC Unit that the CoOp is based off of.
- You will need to sign up for a "job" (The list of jobs along with the description is at the end of this file)
- You will join a Yahoo Group and a Scope & Sequence (S&S) will be emailed to you so that you know what Activities are to be done on what day and what the Themes are for that day.
- You will need to turn in your "job" based on the S&S on or before the due date listed on the S&S
- Have fun and let your kids have fun exploring the subject!
- You should be doing the unit with us as a co-op (not saving the information for a later date.) We will gain much more knowledge from each other if we learn together. Please stay within 1-2 days of where we are in the unit.
About the "Job":
- Each job needs to follow along with what we are studying for that day. (Follow the S&S) Therefore:
- Only one mom will sign up for each job (this is different than before)
- Please post your job by Day in one email per day or one email for the week or whole study.
- Make sure and give credit where credit is due: Include the link!
- Graphics – while they are great to look at for those of us who are visual – they hog too much cyber space and therefore can not be included in the Daily Unit Planner
- All jobs need to be in the body of the email – NOT as an attachment. We want to keep records in the Yahoo Group archives, but Yahoo does not keep attachments.
- The minimum due for each job is 1-3 questions/links … per day
List of Jobs and Basic Job Description:
- Linkster Lady: Will post links based on the S&S. Please make sure that you post the link first and then a little sentence about the link. While some topics may have only a few links others have an unending number of options, please choose only the best of the best and keep the daily links shared less then 5 per day so as not to overwhelm anyone trying to choose just a few to explore. Again links should be posted by the day it will fit into the unit planner. Post at least one per day.
- Story Starters: Will post story starters for each day of the week based on the S&S. Post at least one per day.
- Math Master Upper: Will post story problems based the S&S for upper grades (Grades 4 +). Please include an answer key as well at the end of each post. Post at least one per day.
- Math Master Lower: Will post story problems based on the S&S for lower grades (Grades K-3). Please include an answer key as well at the end of each post. Post at least one per day.
- Craft Crew: Will post supply lists and craft ideas based on the S&S. Post at least one per day.
- Poetry Princess: Will postpoetry and quotes that can be used for pleasure, copywork, language arts, etc... based on the S&S. Post at least one per day.
- Scripture Squire: Posts a list of scriptures based on the S&S. Post at least one per day in both NIV and KJV.
- File Fiend: Uploads and organizes all the Graphics sent through the group into the file section of the Co-Op (make sure and wait till Niki makes the final Graphic before uploading, we have limited space so we don't want doubles.)
- Substitute Sally: If anyone in the co-op has to back out for some reason (illness, major computer troubles, etc) the Substitute Sally will step in and take over where they left off, this is not a free ride…you'll need to be ready to jump in and help at moments notice.
- Preschool Princess: Will post at least 1 per day preschool level activities based on the S&S. These activities would use the topic to reinforce preschool skills like ABC's, numbers, shapes, etc . . .
- Game Guru: Creates a list of questions and answers (1-2 per day) that can be used as game cards. (Niki will create a generic game board to use for these.) 80% of these questions and answers should come from the unit guide. Also will find sources online for java type games to play on the subject or games to print and play (such as bingo.)
- Geography Genie: This encompasses the "around the world" type job. By Geography here, it's not just maps and features but people and customs. This needs to be posted by Day based on the S&S. Post at least one per day.
- Science Scanner: Locate and submit science experiments and activities for each day of the unit. For history units, this job can focus on leading scientists of the day and/or major advances that were discovered during that time period.
- Literary Librarian: This person would be responsible for finding good books to read to go along with the co-op topic...both picture books for the youngers and chapter books for the olders. The person would then post a few discussion questions to go along with the books. This needs to be posted by Day. Post at least one per day.

What Others are saying about the Co-Ops |
|
|
|
|
I enjoy learning through the HOAC co-ops because my lapbooks have way more information in them when I am done. I like going back to look at my finished books later in the year. Paige Huller (age 12)
I like the HOAC co-ops because I like the extra activities we get to do. It's more fun to do stuff than to read about it. Kellie Huller (age 10)
I love the incredible amount of information that all of the co-op participants find for the units. I also thoroughly enjoy the comradery of the co-op groups even though we are located around the world. Two heads, or in this case, multiple home school moms are certainly better than one. Dana Huller
As my children grow older and begin leaving home, I have strongly considered starting an early childhood/preschool . The HOAC lapbooks, unit extenders, and co-ops will be the foundation of our learning process. Dana Huller |
