Election Day 2008
by Katie Kubesh
There has been quite a bit of talk lately on the yahoo groups about completing a lapbook on Elections this year. If just so happens that at In the Hands of a Child we are currently working on an Elections Project Pack that was custom ordered. What a great year to explore the election process in the United States. As we get closer to November 4th, the amount of media coverage will increase more and more and chances are kids will see some of it and not understand. What better way to learn about our election process than by completing a lapbook?
As a parent, we not only have the responsibility of voting we also have the responsibility of teaching our children the things they need to know to become responsible, productive citizens. The election process can be confusing to adults and children alike so let me explain just a few simple facts about Elections.
A candidate is the world used for the people who will be voted for. There are two main candidates that run for president. Most people will vote for one of the candidates.
A voter is every U.S. citizen who is over the age of 18 years old (there are some other “rules” to be voters too, but you’ll have to get the Project Pack to find them all out!)
A vote is when a voter chooses someone to be the president.
Candidates belong to a political party. There are two main parties: the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. Contrary to what my 6-year old thinks, a political party is not a bunch of people dressed up like clowns eating cake and making balloon animals (well, according to some people it may be). A political party is a group of people who all believe in the same way that the government should be run.
The upcoming Elections Project Pack from In the Hands of a Child covers these simple facts plus much more. Your child will learn about the history of Election Day, the campaign process, election process (including an explanation about the electoral college that is easy enough for kids to understand), and what happens after the election. In addition, there are some fun facts like who was known as the “White House hostess”, who was the only president sworn in on an airplane, and much more!
Look for the Elections Project Pack coming in July at In the Hands of a Child!

Katie Kubesh is co-owner and writer/researcher for In the Hands of a Child.  Recognizing that hands-on projects are essential to the learning experience, In the Hands of a Child has created Project Packs that go beyond the hands-on aspect.   They have taken the preparation time out of the parent/teacher job description with Complete Ready to Assemble Lapbook-style units that are available in Ebook, Printed Book, and CD formats. Please visit their website at www.handsofachild.com.
