How Do I Love Thee? Giving Our Kids Five a Day! By Katie Kubesh When I think about my three daughters, I am instantly filled with emotion and love for each of them. Although they are similar in many ways, they each have special characteristics that I love about each one. For example, I love how Sophie gets so excited about starting (and finishing) a new book- her eyes shine with anticipation as she opens the first page and they continue to shine until she finishes the last one. I love how my affectionate Sammy puckers up her little lips for a kiss and I love how Ella says her entire name- first, middle, and last, when someone asks her what her name is. Do they know that I love these things about them? They do because I tell them. But do they know all of the wonderful things I love about each of them? There isn’t enough time in the day for me to tell each of them all of the things I love about her. Whether you are the parent of one child or the parent of eight, it can often be difficult to show each child how important he or she is. Life becomes so busy that some days it may seem hard to squeeze in the time to show your loved ones, especially your kids, how much you care. Valentine’s Day just passed but why can’t everyday be Valentine’s Day? There are lots of ways to show we the children in our lives that we care about them. Just like we pick five servings of vegetables to feed them each day, why not give them five servings of love each day? Here are just a few to choose from: © Smile at your child. © Acknowledge your child. © Look in your child’s eyes when you talk to him or her. © Be honest with your child. © Ask your child’s opinion about something. © Listen to your child’s stories. © Hug your child. © Give your child space when she or he needs it. © Laugh at your child’s jokes. © Admit when you make a mistake. © Encourage your child to be creative. © Give your child options. © Play with your child. © Read aloud with your child. © Sing with your child. © Ask your child questions about him or her. © Encourage your child to give to others. © Notice when your child is acting differently. © Accept your child as he or she is. © Love your child! Katie Kubesh is co-owner and writer/researcher for In the Hands of a Child. Recognizing that hands-on projects are essential to the learning experience, In the Hands of a Child has created Project Packs that go beyond the hands-on aspect. They have taken the preparation time out of the parent/teacher job description with complete ready-to-assemble lapbook units that are available in eBook, printed book, and CD formats.
