An Invitation to “Type-It-In”
ByKatie Kubesh
I have discovered a new appreciation for the Type-It-In Versions of the Project Packs at In the Hands of a Child. The funny thing is, it has absolutely nothing to do with lapbooking! Now, I’ve been feeling handy with them for a while as I repeatedly use the Template Type-It-In Pack to make cute little business cards, library pockets, and cards for my daughters to play with. In fact, I have even been printing out notes to send home with my Brownie Scouts. It saves a lot of paper when I print the reminders on the card templates, print, and cut out each note instead of sending home 25 large sheets of paper. We also made thank you notes for the girls to place with each cookie order they sold - again, with the help of the Template Pack.

This week, however, I found a brand new appreciation for the Type-It-Ins! My middle daughter, Sammy, is turning 6 soon and she has been planning this birthday party since she was, well in her mind, since she was born! Her guest list continually grows as she talks to the mailman, the garbage man, the UPS man, and anyone else who happens to walk within shouting distance of her. It’s not just any birthday party either r- it is a Butterfly Birthday Party. And this explains my quest to look for just the right butterfly birthday invitation.

If the guest list were a manageable number of people, for instance 8, I would have no trouble paying $10.00 for a pack of beautiful butterfly invitations. But, when the guest list slowly grew to over 25 (the garbage man accepted) I began to panic, wondering if the beautiful butterfly invitations would be the only thing “butterfly” about the whole party. When, suddenly it hit me. Why can’t I use something from the Butterfly Project Pack? Hmmm….

It took me longer to spell out “Butterfly Project Ebook with Type-It-In Version” than it took me to find exactly what I was looking for! The first activity was exactly what I needed. If you are familiar with our Project Packs, then you know that the first activity is always vocabulary. It is a very cute vocabulary card. It has the outline of a butterfly and the space inside is blank for students to type in the vocabulary word and its definition. It even has a border of cute flowers. So- what does a cute vocabulary card have to do with my quest for the perfect butterfly invitation? Who says that you have to type in vocabulary words? I typed in Sammy’s birthday information and it fit perfectly!

The next step was printing Activity 1 out on colored 24# paper. I used alternate colors of yellow, green, and orange (the garbage man does not care for pink). Next, I cut out each card (the template fits four to a page) and used double stick tape to place the party details on striped scrapbook paper that I had cut just a bit larger than the printed cards. For embellishment, I added a little tab of paper with a butterfly brad (available at craft and scrapbook stores). Sammy helped with that part and then she place each one in a matching envelope, wrote the name of each guest, and added a butterfly sticker for flair. I hope we spelled the garbage man’s name correctly. The only thing left to do is the party decorations and games. Hmm…I wonder what else we have in the Butterfly Project Pack.

Don’t let your investment with the Project Pack stop when the lapbooks are completed and stored away. There are tons of things you can do with them! For example, use the templates for thank you notes and cards, book labels, holiday decorations, game pieces, scrapbook embellishments, and yes, party invitations!

Here is an example of the Butterfly Invitation that I made for Sammy’s party. We made 30 of them and it took us less than one hour.
